Frequently Asked Questions

Why is security on the Internet so important?

The Internet makes it easy to collect information - in fact it was originally designed so that people could share information. Our priority is to do what we can to ensure that your personal and account information does not get shared with anyone.

When you use Online Banking our objective is to do what we can to ensure that:

  • No one else can access your personal or account information.
  • No one can impersonate us, to you.

How secure is National Bank Online Banking?

Once you log on to Online Banking your session will be secured using a 128-bit encrypted connection between yourself and the Bank. All transactions and Internet messages using National Bank Online Banking are transmitted in this encrypted environment.

Email is not a secure mail facility. Please do not email your personal or account details to us or request personal or account information from us, as we are unable to respond. And you risk someone other than the Bank being able to access your personal information.

For general enquiries, contact us on 0800 49 50 51 (personal customers), or 0800 69 62 69 (business/rural customers) (overseas customers, call +64 4 4739880. You will need to meet the cost of this call).

What browser do I need to use?

To benefit from the full functionality of our website, you need to use a browser that supports 128-bit data encryption and has both JavaScript and cookies enabled. This is a default setting on most computers.

Our new Online Banking will work best in a modern internet browser. We will now support Internet Explorer 7 or above, Firefox 3.5 or above and Safari 4.0 or above. Older versions, such as Internet Explorer 6 may not display Online Banking correctly and may be less secure than our supported Internet browsers. To upgrade your Internet browser visit the Microsoft, Firefox or Apple website.

When should my Online Banking session be secure and how can I tell that it is?

Your Online Banking session is secure any time that you are entering personal information (such as the registration form or your log on details) or when your banking information is displayed on screen.

There are a number of ways that you can check the security of your session. Firstly, you can tell whether a document comes from a secure server by checking the location field (where you type the website address). Once you are connected to a secure server, the URL will begin with https:// instead of http://

There are other ways of checking that your session is secure, depending on the type of browser you are using.

  • A locked padlock at the bottom-right of the browser window denotes a secure page.
  • Alternately, choose ‘File’, and then ‘Properties’ from the top menu bar. The ‘Connection’ information will tell you whether or not the page is encrypted, and if so the level of encryption being used.
