Opening an Account From Overseas

Let our New Resident Services team make your move easier. If you are moving to New Zealand in the near future (to study or live), and will be living here for more than six months, you can apply to open a National Bank account before you arrive.

We offer three convenient ways to apply for your new National Bank account:

Apply for an account over the phone

You can open up a National Bank account with one simple phone call. There are freephone numbers for 22 countries so your call may cost you nothing.

You can deposit up to a NZ$1million by International Money Transfer before your arrival (if you'd like to make a larger deposit just contact us). We'll send you a letter confirming your account information, and will provide contact details for your National Bank branch. Once you arrive in New Zealand, just come into any branch of The National Bank to show us your passport. Please note that until you have presented the documentation, your account will be set up for credit funds only and you will not be able to make any withdrawals until after you have arrived in New Zealand .

When the Bank has viewed your documentation, you'll be able to transfer more funds into the account and it will become fully operational. Call us now for more details or to open an account.

Complete an Application Form

Applying for a National Bank account by mail is easy. Simply print off and complete our New Resident Application form:

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the PDF version. If you don't have it, don't worry - it's free. Just follow this link to the Adobe site to download a copy.

In order to process your mail application you will need to send a few items of documentation with it, so we have included a handy checklist on the form.

Once you have completed the form, fax or mail it to us, along with your documentation, at the following address:

Fax: +64 9 252 2015

When your application has been processed, we will send you confirmation of your account number and branch contact details. You will then be able to make deposits into your National Bank account by International Money Transfer, before you arrive in New Zealand . You will need to arrive in New Zealand within three months of opening your account and present your passport at a National Bank branch to fully access your account.

Our account opening criteria apply. Accounts only available to persons who will be living in New Zealand for six months or more.
